Could Rafa Really Have Choked At Wimbledon?

Rafael Nadal, the number two-ranked player in the world, is known for his mental toughness on the men’s tennis circuit. He’s won countless tournaments on his aggressive style of play and mental toughness including the 2011 French Open. But last week, Djokovic defeated Nadal 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the 2011 Wimbledon final. Did Nadal choke in the championship match against Novak Djokovic? Was Nadal’s confidence hurting because he lost four previous matches to Djokovic? In today’s article, I’ll explain why Nadal may have choked during the final match at Wimbledon and what I think constitutes choking in sports.

According to Nadal himself, his confidence took a hit from the previous loses he suffered to Djokovic. Nadal stated that confidence is key especially when he was playing the important points of the match. “I started the final match without thinking [about the previous loses to Novak]. But when you arrive to 5-4 in the set, these [critical] moments, it probably affects you a little bit. That’s what happened, and that’s why,” Nadal explained after losing.

I think the previous wins became a mental advantage for Djokovic, which helped him to win the Championship in four sets. Novak said that winning the previous matches gave him more confidence to win the critical points or play well during the tough moments in the match. In addition, Novak used mental imagery to recall when he performed well against Nadal in previous matches and why. “Probably, you know, because I have won four times, consecutive times, in the finals against him this year. So I had that in the back of my mind. I was trying to take myself back to those matches and really perform the same way that I performed those days in those matches: aggressive, taking my chances, not giving him opportunity to take over the control,” said Djokovic after winning Wimbledon

The Momentum of Djokovic

Tennis is a game of momentum.

You’ve probably at some point lost or stolen momentum from an opponent during a match and it changed the outcome of the match. Happens every day in tennis and other sports. Momentum is all about confidence, and in tennis players can use the power of momentum to turn around the final outcome of a match. When you have momentum on your side, you feel like everything going for you. You play with more confidence and momentum helps you to maintain confidence.

Novak Djokovic used momentum to defeated Rafeal Nadal 6-4, 6-4 in the finals at the Italian open, extending his winning streak to 37 matches in 2011. “Matches between the top players are always very close, and, you know, obviously everybody’s hitting the ball well. Everybody is physically fit and practicing hours and hours every day.

But, if you have the mental ability to stay strong, stay patient and confident and just have belief in the right moments, then you get a win, you know.

So that’s what makes the difference,” said Djokovic. Djokovic’s current winning streak is only five matches short of John McEnroe record-breaking run of 42 wins that he recorded in 1984. “Given that there’s more competition, more athleticism and deeper fields now, I’d say his record is even more impressive than mine”, said McEnroe.

Djokovic attributes his streak to high levels of confidence, a strong mental game, and being able to harness momentum. “The bottom line is that this is a very mental game. Confidence is probably the most important. And if you have momentum, you want to try to keep that momentum going, keep that confidence rolling for you. You know, that’s why the streak is there,” said Djokovis.

However, a setback such as the referee making a bad call or losing a couple key points in the match can cause you to lose momentum quickly. When this happens, it’s hard for players to regain momentum. Negative momentum causes you to have doubts, think negatively, and dwell on the previous mistakes or setback. This makes it much harder for you to regain momentum.

How can tennis players keep momentum during matches?

To maintain momentum in tennis, you should continue to play the game that helped you get momentum — maybe that was an aggressive style of play or maybe a consistent style of play. Continue to play fearless tennis. Most changes in momentum happen when you get a lead in the match and you try to hold onto the lead. You don’t want to protect your lead in the match or try not to blow the lead. Don’t lose faith in your game if momentum changes. Be patient that you can snatch back momentum. But you may have to change your style of play or go back to what worked at the start of the match.

If you can harness momentum and keep it when you have the lead in a match, you’ll be able to close out more matches and have bigger wins. If Djokovic can keep the momentum going, he’ll supplant McEnroe’s record of 42 matches in a row.

I don't think so. You will hardly find any Asian cheering for Andy Murray at Wimbledon. Or anyone of foreign origin travelling to a different continent to support England at a football world cup. Also when England play Pakistan, India or Sri Lanka only 10% of the people present in the stadium cheer for England.

Are you a fan of Andy Murray (the tennis player) ?

or do you not give a damn what he does at Wimbledon ?

Andy Murray – can’t we give the guy a break?

Right,

Tennis fans do not come much bigger than me. I LOVED Tim Henman, yes, partly for the fact he was an almost-man. When Andy Murray came along with his petulant demeanour and miserable presence, I was determined not to like him. His off the cuff comment about disliking English teams furthered my opinion on him.

But at Wimbledon this year, I was at centre court when he fought back against Richard Gasquet at 2 sets down, and I could not fail to be impressed. Since then, I admit I have been converted.

Now I read, especially on here, so many armchair idiots who never have or never will understand the difficulty of men's tennis, nor have they ever been to a match, slagging him off and celebrating his defeat. Why? He tried didn't he? Find me anyone else in the world who gets slagged off for not beating arguably two of the greatest tennis playes ever in successive matches.

Can't the UK stop criticising our sportsmen for once and support them?
And to put to bed once and for all his "Dislke for anything English", he was goaded into that by an interviewer cracking jokes about how bad Scottish sports were. I am English and I support the lad.

Why is Andy Murray such a rubbish Loser?

I say bring back Tim Henman - at least with Henman, you knew that he was NEVER ever going to win wimbledon. Even so it was fun to watch.
Murray will NEVER win wimbledon, but he has the delusion that 'one day' he will. He is such a loser and a boring one at that.
Why dont they bring back Tim Henman?
Ha, murray is not so 'young' in tennis terms. Becker had already won two wimbledon titles at that age. Federer has at least 3 to 4 years to play and Roddick much longer. Murray is trying to punch above his weight. He talks the talk but cannot walk the walk.
Actually by age 22 the greats Becker had won THREE titles. Federer had won two - all the other greats Agassi, Mcenroe, Lendal, Sampras, Nadal, Roddick etc had at least made it to finals by that age!
Murray is a default winner - his only hope of winning is that all the good players who beat him go away. If Nadal had been at wimbledon, Murray would NEVER have even reached the semi-finals.

Andy Murray. In a grand slam final. Can he do it?

Andy Murray has just won his semi-final in four sets, and has reached Sunday's Australian Open final in Melbourne.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8484401.stm

I have followed this tournament for two weeks now, and I have my opinions on Andy's chances - but I thought it only fair to give other tennis fans, and the armchair supporters who believe tennis starts and ends with Wimbledon, their say on the matter.

So, can Andy become the first British player since 1977, and the first British male since 1936, to lift a tennis major?

And will you be supporting him?

Today it was announced that Andy Murray has split from Brad Gilbert as his coach. Why was Brad Gilbert paid so much to coach him. Even Pat Cash said on the news today that it was ridiculous that such an amount was paid for a coach. OK Murray is a good tennis player, but does he deserve that much backing to try to get a British player to win Wimbledon? OH I forgot he is Scottish.

But Andy Murray angers me because, when the world cup was on he said in a interview, at wimbledon people should focus on him not football.

Come on Andy you were playing in england, what did you expect?

if he is aint england maybe he should stop playing tennis here

He has the mental age of a five year old

Does anybody agreed?
sorry anti- english

Is Andrew Castle stalking and in love with Andy Murray?

Have you heard him commentate on the Murray matches? He knows everything about him and even when he loses a point he always says things like "Murray should have won that". He seems to draw the ultimatum that all the Wimbledon audience are on Murray's side and acts like noone can beat him. Its quite disturbing. especially when he says things such as "Good Lad!"

Your thoughts?

I saw him this year on centre court against Gasquet at Wimbledon and I was bowled over by his resilience.... Not his biggest fan before I am warming to the lanky beanpole now....

An old and boring question, but can he do it? Is he better equipped than the boy Henman (or indeed the boy Rusedski) to finally do SW19?
Haz - no-one (not even you) loves Tim more than me. In fact, I yelled in ill-judged "Come on, Tim" at a Greg Rusedski match in Nottingham in 1999.... I was also gutted in 2001 as that was his best chance.... Yep Andy's on-court (s)exploits did leave a bitter taste in the mouth (!) but he seems to be getting more mature. More than can be said for us!
